Tony Christensen and Erik Hansen opened the first Copenhagen Imports furniture showroom in Phoenix, AZ. back in 1970. That decision was based more on idealism and a passion for good clean design than actual business sense or market studies. Other local furniture store owners shook their heads and said, "That stuff will never sell. Six months and they're out." It was quite to the contrary as the modern teak furniture did indeed sell. In fact, it sold so well that Copenhagen soon added stores in Tempe, Tucson, and then in Scottsdale. Copenhagen's growth continued, moving into Texas with the opening of El Paso and then San Antonio and Austin.
